"GOOD GUN"

Almost 20 years ago, back in 1993 we discussed the criteria of a “good gun” with the late Ray Chapman of Chapman Academy of Practical Shooting. Ray named the criteria in the following order:

  1. reliability
  2. good trigger
  3. good sighting system
  4. size&shape fitting the shooter

We believe it is very true still it needs some concretization.

LIGHT, COMPACT AND VERY… VERY RELIABLE

The “short” AK fits the criteria mentioned above nicely. There are some other platforms that we tested – you can see the result in videos.

THE TRIGGER

SIGHTING SYSTEM

3.1 THE RED DOT ADVANTAGE

If used correctly the RD gives the gunfighter the most important advantage – the uninterrupted visual control of the enemy, their movements and the situation in general. It was best explained by Mr. Kelly McCann in his excellent videos.

“CONTROLABILITY”

Controllability of the weapon is actually the speed it returns to the point of aim after recoil. It is the combination of the technique and a good compensator fitting the technique. Or the technique alone. In figures, we are speaking of the ability to deliver 2nd aimed shot in the time frame of .10 – 15 of a second at the distance of 50 m shooting off-hand. This is something you normally expect from a highly-tuned IPSC “race gun” from a reputable manufacturer. In the right hands it will shoot 2 A’s at 50 m or more with the splits around .15sec

If you can do this with your battle rifle, you (your gun + your technique) do have control.
